A few great discoveries were made in the early part of the last century….. Winds of change of perception in the field of medicine were continuing to blow across Europe, especially in Germany, France and England. After Hanneman’s Homeopathy, it was Edward Bach that dared the conventional methods to swear by a radically holistic approach to health.
He made an unusual discovery thanks to his keen observation. He discovered that most physical ailments are invariably accompanied by a set of strange and undesirable mental and emotional symptoms or mood alterations. They seemed to appear along with and sometimes even much ahead of the physical symptoms.
He discovered that the mental and the emotional aspects of the disease were falling into a few discernable patterns. To crown these discoveries, he found that a few flowers could actually heal each of these patterns.
Like a true scientist he disclosed the names of the flowers to a then skeptical scientific world, and asked them to try and evaluate the therapeutic power of the flowers for themselves. He dared the world to disprove his findings. He documented the patterns that he discovered, the flowers he identified, documented the relationship between the flowers and the mental and the emotional symptoms of the patterns. He then disclosed the methods of capturing the healing essence of these flowers and finally demonstrated the results to the world by himself preparing the remedies from the flowers and practicing in England with these remedies.
These remedies eventually became very popular. They were used and are being used by many practitioners. They are now called ‘The Bach Flower Remedies’.
Even before Dr. Edward Bach discovered the wonderful healing nature of the flowers, a French lady in India, a true Yogini, a Scientist of a very high caliber in the field of consciousness, popularly known as the The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, had discovered and disclosed even deeper aspects of the flowers. She called the flowers the most perfect manifestations in the world of forms. She called them truly, integrally, ‘soulful’. She disclosed to the world that the flowers can affect even deeper aspects of our consciousness, not just a few mental and emotional states.
She approached the flowers from a deeper perspective and studied them at deeper levels. She arrived at the significance of each flower by the process of ‘yogic identification’. She used them for many yogic, subtle purposes. She experimented what she discovered. She was a very keen, a thorough going and a meticulous researcher. Her contributions to the human consciousness and progress are not yet fully known to the world. Her work on the flowers has been compiled and published. A comprehensive research work is going on in Pondicherry on the therapeutic applications of these discoveries of the Mother. We are waiting for the results to be published.
Interestingly even Edward Bach of England had said that his flower remedies bring about the results ‘by releasing the soul powers of the individual’. That is why, when treated by them, the undesirable mental and emotional symptoms vanish, and they are promptly replaced by their corresponding positive aspects. For instance, when a remedy is selected say for an intolerant attitude towards trivialities, the patient becomes wise in identifying what to tolerate and how far. Tolerance and intolerance will never be a problem with patient if the remedy is well selected. A dynamic balance will be established by the ‘soul powers’ that will be released. A lady suffering from some menstrual problem was also depressed for some reasons relevant to her. When treated with a well selected Bach Remedy, she was not only cured of the menstrual problems but also the depression. She now ‘on her own’ developed robust and balanced attitudes towards her problems and solved them all.
Dr. Edward Bach, M.B.B.S., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., was qualified at University College Hospital, London. He was a casualty Medical officer, and then a Bacteriologist there and practiced in Harley street London. Thereafter he also studied homeopathy and practiced it. Between the year 1930 and 1936 he found, perfected and put into use his simple and effective healing system. In this system, there are only thirty eight remedies. Let’s discuss some of them some other day to see how far we can find them useful.
